Professor Howard Branley - Consultant in Respiratory Medicine

I am a lung specialist and am on the Specialist Register with the General Medical Council (GMC) as a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine providing specialist diagnosis and treatment for respiratory, chest and sleep disorders. I have been specialising in respiratory medicine for over 20 years, with more than 10 years experience as an NHS Consultant. I typically see patients with cough, wheeze, breathlessness and snoring. I have expertise in a wide variety of lung diseases particularly asthma, pneumonia, lung cancer, sleep apnoea, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis (TB), and pleural disease e.g. pneumothorax and pleural effusion.

I qualified in Medicine in 1992 from the University of Liverpool and trained in respiratory medicine in Liverpool and London. In 1997 I trained in aviation medicine at the Royal Air Force (RAF) School of Aviation Medicine at RAF Farnborough. I trained in Respiratory Medicine in London teaching hospitals including The Royal Brompton, The Hammersmith, St Mary's and Charing Cross Hospitals. During my postgraduate training I obtained a Master of Science with Distinction in Respiratory Medicine (MSc) followed by a Doctorate in Respiratory Medicine (MD), both at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London. I started as an NHS Consultant in Respiratory Medicine in 2004, initially at The Whittington Hospital, North London before moving to Ealing Hospital, West London in 2012.

In September 2014, after 22 years service in the NHS (more than 10 of which were at Consultant level) I moved into full-time independent practice. I divide my professional time between seeing private patients, medicolegal work and aviation medicine. I am still an Honorary NHS Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. I was revalidated by the GMC on 7th October 2015 with my next revalidation due in October 2020. My most recent Consultant Appraisal was on 29th September 2017.

I undertook specialist Expert Witness training with Bond Solon and was successful in achieving the Cardiff University Law School & Bond Solon Certificate in Expert Witness training. Since then I have steadily built up a specialist respiratory medicolegal practice.

I am Consultant Adviser in Respiratory Medicine to the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), a role that sees me assessing and advising pilots and air traffic controllers with respiratory problems.

In April 2014 I was awarded a Visiting Professorship of Respiratory Medicine at the University of West London, having previously been an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine at both Imperial College London and the University of Buckingham, UK.

Outside work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and 2 children. I spend time outdoors with our two dogs (a German Shepherd and a Labrador) walking around the many parks London has to offer. I love the outdoors and camping and enjoy teaching bushcraft skills in my role as a local Scout Leader. I'm a keen sports fan and avid supporter of Everton FC. I am a frequent traveller to Andalucia, Spain and enjoy Spanish food and trying to improve my language skills.
